Friends of Jackson County Conservation is sponsoring a Styrofoam recycling drive January 10-12, 2025 at the Hurstville Interpretive Center. Styrofoam can be dropped off Friday, January 10 from 9:00 AM- 5:30 PM; Saturday, January 11 from 12:00- 4:00 PM; and Sunday, January 12 from 12:00- 4:00 PM.

To ensure the Styrofoam gets recycles, make sure to follow all the rules. Failure to follow these rules, and your Styrofoam will not be accepted and thrown away. Styrofoam must be clean and free of all food residue; remove all tape and labels; white Styrofoam only/no colors; packing peanuts must be bagged; drop off only during designated dates/times.

All Styrofoam collected is taken to Cedar Falls for recycling. The City of Cedar Falls was awarded funding through a grant from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources Solid Waste Alternatives Program (SWAP) to purchase a foam densifying machine that shred and heats the material to densify it. The hot, runny material is formed into heavy, solid blocks which makes this product marketable to recyclers.
