Jerry and Julie Skalak will present many of the highlights from a Gate 1 Discovery small group tour of Turkey/Turkiye taken October 24 – November 10, 2024.

Note that the name of the country was officially changed to its Turkish spelling, Turkiye, and pronunciation in 2022. This change was in part due to wanting to dissociate themselves from the bird and the slang definition of “turkey” as being something that doesn’t work or is foolish.

Amazing is only one of the many superlative descriptors applicable to Turkiye. The country has an incredibly long and complex history as well as a very diverse geography. It has been the center of great trade routes for thousands of years, has been ruled by several different empires, and religion has greatly influenced its culture, lifestyles and even architecture. Its largest city, Istanbul, has grown to become one of the great cities of the world. Our tour included not only several days in Istanbul but multiple destinations throughout western Turkiye. During this presentation you will get to know just how amazing Turkiye is. Its ancient ruins, grand mosques, massive bazaars, many waterways, extensive agriculture, calls to prayer, whirling dervishes, ballooning, unique cuisine (kabobs and more kabobs), and cats (lots and lots of cats), are just some of the many things that make Turkiye such a special place

Don’t miss this opportunity to experience the truly unique sights and sounds, the grandeur and complexity, that makes Turkiye amazing! And it’s Pie Day!
