We are introducing a new section called, “Remember When”. We asked the residents this question: “Did you play any ‘Sports’ in High School?”

James H.: “I played baseball for the city of Zwingle (which was part of the ‘Prairie League Baseball’). I was pretty good. I probably ‘stole’ more bases than anyone in the Prairie League! My Mom wanted us to go to a Catholic School. They had two years of high school (offering no sports) at St. Lawrence Catholic High School in Otter Creek, but I wanted to play sports. My first year of high school at St. Lawrence had no sports; and I could not go to Maquoketa High School (which offered sports), so I just quit. I played any position that Zwingle needed for me to play. I played every position but pitching. I started out at ‘short stop’, but then as my arm grew weaker, they moved me to third base. I only played a couple of games, and then I played all 3 areas of the outfield, but there was not much excitement out there. I hit one home run, I think! I could really run! My favorite team is the CUBS. In my younger days, I was a Dodgers fan. As the years went by, my Mom retired, and she lived in an apartment. Every time I went to see my Mom, she was watching the CUBS, so, I switched to the CUBS! Back in earlier times, the Dodgers had a really good team! They had Sandy Koufax! ‘What Memories!’ P.S. : I also, enjoyed the Sport of Hunting (Elk and Deer), and Mushroom Hunting as other sporting interests.”

(We want to thank James and family for sharing his memories of “the past” with us. Hopefully, sharing and reminiscing this, will bring some smiles to your face, as you read this article.)
