
Several tankers delivered water from the Miles water tower to the water tanks set up to supply the aerial hoses as they were used to put out the flames from above.

As the fire was coming under control, local fire department volunteers took time to discuss protocols and various approaches to firefighting before beginning to pack up their equipment for the next call.

Smoke filled the air in Miles as the fire departments began to get ahead of the flames.

Flames shot out of the building from the rooftop and the windows. The downtown area of Miles was at risk had the firemen not been able to contain the situation and arrive in a timely fashion. The Miles Post Office is located directly across from the now demolished structure.

The aerial ladder and water hoses were key components in the firefighting effort.

Assistance was provided by Jackson County Emergency Management, the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, and the Preston Police Department. Responding fire departments included Andover, Bellevue, Charlotte, Goose Lake, Maquoketa, Miles, Preston, and Sabula.

Kunde’s were called in to push the remaining building to the ground.

The building was no longer structurally sound and posed a threat to the public if they drew near, so it was immediately pushed down before the last crews left the scene.
