ALUMNI OF THE YEAR AWARD

The 4-H Alumni of the Year award is given to a person or group who has shown great involvement in 4-H, whether it be through their own past participation, volunteerism, or leadership, to name a few.

This year, the Jackson County 4-H Alumni of the Year is given in Memory of Lola Trenkamp.

Lola Trenkamp was born in 1960 to Leroy and Charlene Johnson. She spent her childhood on their family farm near Maquoketa, Iowa. There they owned and operated a Dairy Cow herd before transitioning to row crops and feedlot cattle. Lola was very involved in her youth in 4-H with the Cloverites Club and in the Maquoketa FFA.

On January 31, 1981 Lola married Lonnie Trenkamp in Preston, IA. Upon marriage, they began to operate the family dairy farm started by Lonnie’s parents West of Preston, IA. They purchased the family farm in 1994 and continued to operate the dairy and row crop farm until November of 2011. Lola loved her Holstein cows and spent a lot of her time with them or with her children over the over 30 years that they milked.

Lola was heavily involved with the Jackson/Clinton County Dairy Association during this time frame, helping promote the dairy industry and being a member of the dairy committee for the dairy show at the Jackson County Fair for many years.

Lola and Lonnie are proud parents to six children: Aaron (Carrie) Trenkamp of Grand Mound, Carl (Whitley) Trenkamp of Bellevue, Katie (Mason) Tieskoetter of Ossian, Evan (Dana) Trenkamp of DeWitt, Tyler (Rachel) Trenkamp of Maquoketa and Nicole (Ryan) Trenkamp of Wisconsin. Lola’s love for her family continues to grow over the years with the addition of many grandkids!

Volunteering with 4-H has been a part of Lola’s life for over 30 years. Lola’s passion for what 4-H provides carried through to her six children who were members of the Preston Trailblazers. Not only did Lola volunteer with her children’s local 4-H club, but she has also been the superintendent of the Bucket Bottle Calf project for over 25 years and was a driving force of the continued large participation in the project by local youth. She has also been very involved with indoor project judging day and the 4-H Food Stand.

When Lola wasn’t  busy helping at a 4-H event, she can be found working on the family farm, butchering chickens, watching her grandchildren’s sporting events, and most importantly spending time with her family! Lola will be derly missed by everyone involved with the Jackson County 4-H Program.

BETTY SIEVERDING MEMORIAL 4-H FAMILY OF THE YEAR

In 1989, the Betty Sieverding Memorial 4-H Family of the Year Award was established.  Betty was a long time 4-H volunteer, serving as a leader of the LaMotte Sunshine Queens 4-H club, and as a member of the Jackson County 4-H Youth Committee.  The award honors a 4-H family for their involvement in the 4-H program.

This year’s 4-H family is a prime example of what great qualities can be instilled through the 4-H program. This year, the 4-H family of the year is the Mike Franzen Family.

Mike Franzen Family have been a part of 4-H since the 1980’s when their kids joined 4-H. They also have been a big part of the Jackson County Fair in Maquoketa, IA for many years, and also help out at the Great Jones County Fair in Monticello, IA. The family loves to go to the fairs in Jackson and Jones counties and support the kids.

During the 4-H livestock sales they have purchased several exhibits, but they don’t always bring them home. Instead, they purchase and return them to the exhibitors to take back home. Mike has always liked to see the kids make a little money on their projects. Anyone that calls and asks for information on a certain tractor for a 4-H project, Mike is always there to help and explain to them what it needs to run or the rights parts that need to be on it for that particular year. When it comes to the 4-H kids and their communities, the word NEVER, is not in their vocabulary. # 1 priority is the kids and their 4-H projects and exhibits. They have been strong supporters for years and will be strong supporters for years to come because their grandkids have started to show at the local fairs.

Needless to say, the Franzen have been very involved in 4-H because they believe in the program and the values it instills in its youth.

HONORARY 4-H MEMBER AWARD

The award of honorary 4-H member is bestowed on a person or group who has significantly contributed to the 4-H program.

The 2023-2024 Honorary 4-H Member award recipient is Moore Local & Rockdale Locker.

Moore Local and Rockdale Locker have been a vital partner and sponsor of Jackson County 4-H for many years.

Moore Local is owned by Brandon and Heather Moore. Moore Local first opened in 2017 starting as a 500-Square Foot holiday pop up today it has grown into a 4,600 square foot retail store, creamery and locker. Rockdale Locker is owned by Brandon and Heather Moore Along with Chad and Kim Thompson. Over the years Moore Local and Rockdale Locker have helped support many 4-H events from hosting County Council meetings, camps and tours, summer programs to just name a few. There support is especially seen during county fair with helping supply the food stand, dollar barn, processing the animals sold in the auction and supporting the youth every step along the way.

CHARLES BUTTERWORTH LEADER AWARD

The Charles Butterworth leader award is awarded each year to a leader who has demonstrated a genuine involvement in the 4-H program. The award is given in memory of Charles Butterworth, the first 4-H program assistant in Jackson County. The Jackson County 4-H County Council selects the recipient of this award.

This year, the Charles Butterworth Leader Award recipients are Lynee Elmegreen and Julia Furne

Lynne Elmegreen has been a strong leader in the 4-H program serving as a club leader of the Cloverites for 10 years. The passion for helping 4-Hers has come from here 30 years of teaching. Thank you, Lynne, for all the advice, guidance and memories you have shared and created with the youth!

Julia Furne has been a leader of the Emeline Ridge Rollers for 8 years. The dedication to the 4-H youth is evident in everything that she has done as a leader. Thank you, Julia, for your dedication and commitment to empower and support the Emeline Ridge Rollers.

IOWA 4-H HALL OF FAME

Counties across Iowa select inductees for the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame

This year, Dean Engel was selected by Youth Committee for this honor.

Dean Engel has been a part of 4-H for over forty years and continues volunteering today. Dean started his 4-H career as a 7-year member of the Maquoketa Sod Busters 4-H Club. One of his favorite projects was raising and showing hogs every year at the Jackson County Fair.

He also had a strong passion for indoor, static projects, especially horticulture and home improvement. One of his memories from growing up in the 4-H program is when his mom encouraged him to get up on stage and participate in the clothing selection event.

Outside of 4-H, Dean is very active in the community. Dean is the executive vice president and senior trust officer at Ohnward Financial Advisor Services.

Dean continues to volunteer his time in the 4-H program today. He has served on the Youth Committee for six years and as president of the Youth Committee. Dean is currently the co-chair of the Together We Build Outreach Center Steering Committee. He has spent many years and hours helping to promote, plan, and design the new County Outreach Center with the goal of the outreach center to give more educational opportunities to the community. Without his leadership and dedication, the project would not be where it is today.
