Iowans on Medicare can review and make changes to their drug plan or Medicare Advantage annually from Oct. 15 until Dec. 7. The Part D and Medicare Advantage plans can change coverage, premiums, co-payments and provider networks every year. Senior Health Insurance Information Programs and Senior Medicare Patrol (SHIIP-SMP) are free, confidential and unbiased services offered by the State of Iowa. Trained volunteers provide one-on-one insurance counseling and assistance at no cost to Medicare-eligible individuals, their families, and caregivers. SHIIP-SMP also provides community outreach and education on Medicare financial assistance eligibility, and how to guard against Medicare fraud. With the implementation of a $2,000 cap on prescription drugs copayments in 2025, it is anticipated that there will be significant changes to plan premiums, deductibles and formularies – making this a good time to review Medicare options. Resources are available through the Iowa Insurance Division to compare plans and make an informed decision. In Jackson County, SHIIP-SMP services are made available at Jackson County Regional Health Center, the sponsor site of SHIIP. Jackson County consumers can connect with SHIIP-SMP services by calling (563) 652-4000 and making an appointment.
